Daniel B. Smith

January 22, 2021: Daniel B. Smith, Director of the Foreign Service Institute (FSI), was appointed Acting Secretary of State, January 20, 2021. He succeeds Michael R. Pompeo on the position, and will serve until President Biden’s nominee for Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, is confirmed. Mr. Smith was appointed Director of the Foreign Service Institute on October 23, 2018. He holds the Department’s highest diplomatic rank of Career Ambassador. He previously served as Assistant Secretary of State for Intelligence and Research from 2013 to 2018, and as Ambassador to the Hellenic Republic from 2010 to 2013. Mr. Smith holds a B.A. from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and a M.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford University.
